The life of an artist in Spain wasn't easy. Their goal
was to be appointed as court painter, which inevitably meant that the
artist painted to please the king. The works required from the artist
usually consisted of portraits of the Royal family, which were sent to friendly
monarchies, but religious paintings were also required to decorate cathedrals and churches.
Foreign painters knew that both the Habsburg and Bourbon monarchies required the
best portraitists and therefore they also came to Spain to look for work.
However, sometimes it was the Spanish monarchy that requested a
specific foreign painter. The purpose of the following information is to introduce you
to some of the greatest artists to ever work in Spain and to encourage you to
find out more about the topic of painting in Spain. Many of these works
are still on display today in art galleries around the world and there is also
a wide choice of books on this topic in most bookshops and libraries.
